The SAHF facilitates and organises housing study tours to Europe and Asia for the benefit of housing practitioners which gives the ideal opportunity to experience first hand the latest housing technologies, management programmes and building technologies.

In addition the SAHF arranges the attendance at International Conferences which have proved to be of great value to delegates. The SAHF through its formal link with the CIH in the United Kingdom promotes regular liaison and exchange programmes between its members through the facilitation of contacts by means of study tours, conferences, exhibitions and training programmes to encourage and facilitate the promotion of housing between academic, technical, professional, research, non-governmental and community-based organisations with a view to broadening the knowledge of housing practice and policy between participating parties in each country.
The SAHF aims to improve the quality of life of local communities through its training initiatives, job creation programmes, harnessing of indigenous technologies, facilitation of the manufacture of building materials and construction programmes, promotion of community based projects relating to self-help, empowerment, capacity building and skills development. The SAHF “Building your own Home” DVD is freely available to communities and individuals wishing to access valuable information on the building process. The DVD demonstrates and explains the step-by-step process of building your own home which incorporates the preparation, building terms, tools required, foundations, floors, walls, doors and windows, roofing, electrical installation, drainage, plastering, glazing and painting. The DVD enables communities to fulfil their dreams of building and owning their own home.
